CONCEPT

Cross-polarized optical microscopy of polymer spherulite nucleation and impingement. Radial fibrils twist helically as they grow outward from dispersed nuclei, producing extinction crosses (isogyres) and periodic concentric interference bands that distort at grain boundaries.

JOURNAL

Attempted to render helical fibrillar twist birefringence superimposed over classical isogyre Maltese crosses ($\sin^2 2 heta$). The periodic extinction bands from lamellar twisting ($\cos^2(\kappa r)$) produce realistic concentric ring patterns seen in banded spherulites. Boundary truncation via Voronoi distance competition correctly produces planar grain contacts rather than curved overgrowths. Mean density (0.59) reflects the sharp transition from isotropic liquid melt to densely packed crystalline spherulite domains.
